How to Determine if Your Smartphone is Waterproof

Can my phone work after being soaked in water? How to know it is water resistance.

Smartphones have become indispensable companions in our daily lives. With their increasing capabilities and sleek designs, many of us desire devices that can withstand the elements, particularly water. However, not all smartphones are created equal when it comes to water resistance. But just in case you wanted to know if your phone is waterproof, what do you do other done risking dropping it in water? Well,

Check the Manufacturer’s Website or User Manual
The first and most straightforward step is to check the manufacturer’s website or user manual. This should be the easiest way how.

Many modern smartphones, especially premium ones, come with some level of water resistance. The manufacturer will explicitly state the device’s water resistance rating and any limitations related to water exposure.

Look for terms like “IP67”, “IP68” or “MIL-STD-810G” in the specifications, as they indicate the level of water resistance.

Look for Physical Indicators
For many smartphones, there are physical indicators that suggest water resistance.

On Android devices, check for rubber gaskets or seals around the SIM card tray and charging port. Additionally, some Android phones have an extra layer of protection around the buttons.

On iOS devices, the presence of a rubber seal around the SIM card tray and a water-resistant mesh covering the speakers and microphone openings are good indicators.

Test the Water Resistance with Water Resistant Ratings
If you want to go the extra mile and test your smartphone’s water resistance yourself, you can use water-resistant ratings. Please note that performing these tests may void your warranty, so proceed with caution and at your own risk. You can do this for both Android and iOS devices;

  1. Power off your phone to prevent any potential damage during the test.
  2. Clean your phone gently to remove any dust or debris from its surface.
  3. Submerge your phone in a container filled with room-temperature water to a depth of about one meter (approximately three feet).
  4. Adhere to the water-resistant rating duration specified by the manufacturer. For example, if your phone has an IP67 rating, it should withstand water exposure for 30 minutes.
  5. Once the time is up, take your phone out of the water and use a soft cloth to wipe it dry.

Observe for Any Water Damage
After conducting the water-resistant test, carefully inspect your smartphone for any signs of water damage. Look for fogging inside the camera lenses, water under the display, or malfunctioning buttons or ports. If you notice any of these issues, your phone’s water resistance may have been compromised, and it’s crucial to seek professional assistance or contact the manufacturer immediately.

So, knowing whether your smartphone is water-resistant or not can save you from costly accidents. Always refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines and specifications for accurate information regarding water resistance.

If you decide to test your device yourself, proceed with caution, and understand the risks involved. Remember, no smartphone is entirely waterproof, so it’s essential to take precautions and protect your device from unnecessary water exposure.
