Apparently searching ‘Nigga’ on Google Maps points at the White House

Despite a temporary suspension of Google’s Map Maker program, someone still managed to deface the popular service.

The Washington Post on Tuesday reported that a Google Maps search inquiry for the racist term “nigga king” will direct you to the White House.

“Some inappropriate results are surfacing in Google Maps that should not be, and we apologize for any offense this may have caused,” a Google spokeswoman told PCMag. “Our teams are working to fix this issue quickly.”

The results however vary by location, and when I tried my own search (from Kampala), well, it didn’t point to the White House. Maybe your location will, give it a try.

A similar search of the phrase “nigga house,” however, still zooms directly in on the White House—”Iconic home of America’s president,” as the map says.

This is not the first instance of erroneous Google Maps results. Last month, a snowboard shop known as Edward’s Snow Den was edited into Google Maps inside the White House executive mansion, a reference to the NSA leaker currently on the run in Russia.

Google chalked it up to inappropriate use of the Map Maker tool, which was temporarily suspended on May 12 after manually approving edits proved too cumbersome.
