MTN Uganda Turns 19 Today: We Look at What They Have Achieved So Far This Year

Uganda’s leading telecom firm; MTN Uganda has today made 19th year in Uganda. Having made it this far, the firm has come to have done amazing things both in our communities and to the country at large.

At 19, they have started #ANewLife, and at the same time #SharingYoPassion.

We look back at what they have managed to achieve from January up-to-date:

October 21st: MTN Uganda celebrates its 19th birthday in Uganda.

October 14th: MTN Uganda announces a one year sponsorship package to Onduparaka Football Club at an agreed deal of 390 million UGX (approx. USD$106,997), bringing it to a total of 820 million UGX (approx. USD$224,967) following their 430 million UGX annually for 3 years (approx. USD$) sponsorship deal to KCCA Football Club in August this year.

September 15: Standard Chartered Bank and MTN Uganda Limited signed an agreement to allow MTN Mobile Money collections for Corporate and Business clients directly into their Standard Chartered Bank accounts on a real time basis. This solution dubbed Straight2Bank Wallet Collections is delivered through the Bank’s Straight2Bank electronic banking platform.

September 12: MTN Uganda and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) announce a partnership that enables NSSF members on the NSSF Voluntary Membership Plan as well as small and medium sized entities to conveniently make payments using MTN Mobile Money.

August 23: MTN Uganda announces a contribution of 50 million UGX towards the 6th annual Kampala City Festival organized by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) under the theme “Revel Diversity—celebrating who we are and the facets that uniquely depict our profusion of brilliant culture and social life.”

July 20: MTN Uganda makes its CallerTunez more affordable and easier to use. This was after the MTN CallerTunez service was revamped to make it more affordable at a reduced price of UGX 700 for a tune, having previously scrapped the subscription charges for the service.

July 6: MTN Uganda introduces new data bundles rates subjected to a little change with the daily 10Mbs priced at UGX250 from UGX300, the daily 50Mbs has been increased to 60Mbs and the priced unchanged (still priced at UGX1000) while on the other hand, the Daily WTF price has been reduced from UGX500 to UGX250. MTN also introduces SWIFT bundle priced at UGX500. The other plans; happy hour, night bundles, and Tooti bundles remained unchanged.

July 3: MTN Uganda announced its integrated marketing and communication function will, with effect from July 1st 2017, be taken over by TBWA, following successful completion of a transition process from its former agency Metropolitan Republic.

June 21: Huawei partnered with MTN Uganda to give laptops and schoolbags to pupils of Kireka Barracks School located in Kireka a suburb of Kampala. The partnership was in relation its 11th edition of  MTN’s 21 Days of Yello Care initiative.

June 5: MTN Uganda announced a long-awaited product to its Internet offering; allowing customers to purchase monthly Unlimited Internet packages. The move was significant as it offered customers a chance to enjoy high speed Internet with no data caps and no MBs to recharge.

June 5: The Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and National Guidance Vincent Bagiire praised MTN Uganda’s services which he said have enabled business and financial inclusion.

“MTN’s introduction into the Ugandan telecommunications market gave a total overhaul to the internet experience in the country, he said.”

June 3: MTN Uganda launches its staff volunteerism campaign aimed at giving back to the community. Dubbed 21 days of Yellow Care, MTN staffers for a period of 21 days carry out classroom renovations and literacy projects, Information Communication Technology (ICT) training’s plus provision of digital educational content to schools.

June 2: MTN Uganda rewards and recognizes outstanding dealers in their first of the kind Sales Awards. According to MTN officials, the awards were meant to appreciate specific dealers “for for their contribution in delivering MTN services to their valued customers.”

May 14: MTN Uganda, in partnership with tech and incubation hub; Outbox Hub announce winners of the 2017 MTN App Challenge – an event that brings local innovators Nationwide to create innovative mobile apps for the better good of our communities.

April 12: MTN Uganda embarked on a drive to appreciate its customers and recommit itself to deliver a distinctive service to its customers. The drive was a themed quarterly exercise that is carried out by the entire company right from the top management team to the customer front line executives.

March 24: MTN Uganda opened a brand new ICT Resource Center at the Gulu War Affected Training Centre in Gulu District at an estimated cost close to UGX 100 million that came weeks after MTN Foundation’s announcement of a 5 billion UGX investment commitment into community development projects in the country.

March 22: MTN Foundation handed over a 216 million UGX cheque to Monitor Publications Limited as a part of the foundation’s commitment to invest 5 billion UGX into Community development projects in Uganda. The donation was meant to boost the News Paper’s Education initiative that aims to promote literacy and a reading culture in impoverished rural schools across the country.

March 20: MTN Uganda hosted their 5th annual Women in Business awards at the Kampala Serena Hotel that marked the end of the two month long search for women who have excelled in their enterprises through the use of tools and opportunities available to them.

March 17: MTN Uganda announces the return of one of it’s biggest promotions of last year on it’s Internet Bundles – Juzza Internet Promo.

March 6: The Board of trustees of MTN Foundation announced a commitment to invest UGX 5 Billion into community Transformation projects across the country. The commitment was announced by the Chairperson MTN Foundation Mr. George William Egadu at a press conference held at the MTN Towers in Kampala.

February 26: MTN Uganda injected 30 million UGX as a contribution towards Rotary Blood Bank fundraising concert. The fundraiser concert that featured renowned South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela alongside Ugandan sax ace Isaiah Katumwa marked 60 years of Rotary in Uganda. All proceeds from the concert went towards equipping and operationalizing the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital and the construction of Mukono Rotary Hospital.

February 23: MTN Uganda partnered with Standard Chartered Bank to launch a mobile wallet service that is now supporting transactions between the Bank and MTN Mobile Money. The platform is tailored to allow StanChart Customers using MTN Mobile Money to send or receive Money directly into their Mobile wallets using the Bank’s banking platforms.

January 17: MTN Uganda, in partnership with aYo, announced an innovative micro-insurance products, Recharge with Care and Send with Care. The two were the first products launched by aYo – a joint venture between MTN and MMI Holdings – announced in September last year.
