Airtel Removes Transaction Fees on Airtel Money Over Coronavirus Outbreak

Airtel Uganda scraps off transaction fees on Airtel Money for the next 30-days due to the coronavirus outbreak. Unlike MTN Uganda who scrapped off the fees only transactions made below UGX30,000, Airtel completely removed the fees — applying only when sending money from one Airtel customer to another.

Mr. VG Somasekhar, in a press statement said, “the company has waived all fees on person to person transactions, as well as making Airtel Money Pay free for both customers and merchants.”

Telcos are doing this, to see that their customers stop using hard cash as it is one of the ways to easily spread the virus.

“In the face of unprecedented health risks, the safety and health of Ugandans is of utmost importance to us. Airtel Uganda has moved to support efforts to control the spread of Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic by promoting the conversion of physical cash to digital/ electronic transactions,” writes Airtel.

On the other hand, the company also stated that there will be no charge on its Airtel Money Pay for both the customers and the merchants. Airtel Money Pay is similar to MTN‘s MoMoPay where customers can pay for their goods and services right to the merchant’s code where no charge is issued.

Just like any other recommendation, the telco has also emphasized and called on the general public to avoid shaking hands, hugs, sneezing with mouth open, wash hands with soap, use sanitizers, among others.
