Twitter bans automated following

twitter-1Twitter has put a ban on automated following and lightened restrictions on third-party curation services. This is after it updated its developer guidelines with a number of changes and clarifications.

This update, which affects both Twitter’s Rules of the Road and Display Requirements, continues the company’s decision to aggressively dictate how developers should and should not utilize its network.

On the subject of curating tweets with posts from other networks, it appears that as long as such curation is done manually, it has Twitter’s blessing which is certainly good news for startups like Storify.

Twitter developer advocate Sylvain Carle says third-parties are no longer allowed to host “datasets of raw Tweets for download.” As for services that enable automated and bulk following, these have firmly been axed.
