Uganda: UCC Boosts Disaster Preparedness

The equipment was donated by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) through its Division of Emergency Telecommunications under the auspices of UCC.

Mr Godfrey Mutabazi, the executive director, handed over the equipment to the minister, Dr. Stephen Mallinga on August 7. The phones can use both satellite and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) networks. They also provide accurate GPS (Global Positioning System) coordinates to aid relief and rescue.

Dr Mallinga applauded UCC and ITU for the support and said the equipment would help in overcoming the current problems caused by disasters.

He said the government has a plan to set up a disaster office at each district headquarters to coordinate with the centre in Kampala in an effort to mitigate the effects of disasters on the people.
