How to Add Another Person to Face ID on Your iPhone

Apple's Face ID feature allows the addition of a second face with the “Alternate Appearance” option and while it is intended as a second Face ID profile for yourself.

In 2017, Apple Inc. switched from Touch ID to Face ID starting with the iPhone X and now to the newer models. Face ID has since gradually evolved to become one of the best phone-unlock methods ever. The method is generally smooth and simple where with just a glance at the front of the phone, one can quickly unlock their device, sign into supported apps and websites, as well as make purchases of items with Apple Pay.

The Face ID feature allows the addition of a second face with the “Alternate Appearance” option and while it is intended as a second Face ID profile for yourself — to let you capture two different versions of your face, you can actually use it to give a second person permission to access your phone if you both share the phone or in case of emergencies.

Note: Anyone you grant access to your phone with Face ID will have the same complete control over the device just like you.

For you to be able to use Face ID, your phone must be one of the following iPhone models:

  • iPhone X, XR, XS, or XS Max.
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max.
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, or 12 Pro Max.
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, or 13 Pro Max.
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus.

Here’s how to add another face to Face ID:

1. Launch the Settings app.

2. Tap Face ID & Passcode. You will be required to enter your passcode to get into this settings page.

3. Select Set Up an Alternate Appearance.

4. Give the iPhone to the other person and let them follow the instructions to set up Face ID.

After the completion of the process, both of you (the owner of the phone and the second person) should now be able to sign into the phone using Face ID.

In case you don’t see Set Up an Alternate Appearance, that means one thing — you’ve already done that, probably to have two appearance profiles for yourself. In this case, find the Reset Face ID and tap it. This will erase both your Face ID profiles and you can then set up Face ID for yourself, and use the Alternate Appearance option for another person.
