Airtel Follows MTN, Now Charges One Rate Across All Networks

Airtel Uganda follows MTN Uganda’s footsteps and now charges its customers one rate across all networks. Similar to MTN’s recent announcement, effective 2nd April, calls are charged UGX4 per second and UGX180 per minute.

Airtel points out that the rates won’t apply to postpaid customers as well as voice bundles. The mentioned bundles include; MyPaka Paka, Paka Paka and Zaweze. Meaning if the customer subscribed for any of the bundles, they would be charged differently from the newly introduced rates.

We haven’t heard from Africell Uganda as yet, but we assume the telco will impose the same rates.

The bid in making such moves is to better customer experience on their networks. A number of users are today are looking at social media platforms as the preferred mode of communications. Platforms such as WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber, LINE, allow users to make voice calls.

One other example of how telcos are trying to make customer experience better was to have the same USSD code for checking you airtime balance. Previously, telcos had different codes and at times customers would get confused of which code applies to which network. It was till all telcos were directed to use *131# are the primary USSD code to check airtime balance.
