OpenAI’s ChatGPT iOS App Now Available in 7 More African Countries

The ChatGPT iOS app is available for download in 34 more countries at no cost and it is ad-free.

OpenAI has expanded its ChatGPT mobile app for iOS to more countries. When OpenAI first unveiled its mobile app last week, the app was only available in the U.S. which was later extended to users in Europe, South Korea, and New Zealand earlier this week with the promise to expand to even more countries. Now the company has announced the availability of the app in 34 more countries including 7 African countries.

The list of new countries includes Algeria, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Estonia, Ghana, India, Iraq, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, Nauru, Oman, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Qatar, Slovenia, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The ChatGPT app, which is available for free download and ad-free, lets users interact with the generative AI-based chatbot on their iPhones. While you can dictate text using Apple’s built-in speech recognition feature, it supports voice input through OpenAI’s speech recognition system Whisper and also lets ChatGPT Plus+ users access advanced features through GPT-4. People who are already familiar with ChatGPT will feel right at home as it’s basically just a way to interact with the chatbot.

When you open the app, the text box is at the bottom of the screen (similar to the web version) where you can go ahead and type your commands. After you hit the send button, OpenAI processes your command and returns an AI-generated answer. Just like the web, you can follow up with more information/instructions on the same command or ask for a different answer.

By default, ChatGPT saves your chat history and uses it for model training. When this feature is enabled, you will also be able to find your conversations on the desktop. It’s worth noting that there’s no way to disable data sharing without disabling chat history too.

Meanwhile, according to the data shared by app intelligence firm data.ai, the app crossed half a million downloads in the first six days since its launch —making it one of the highest-performing new apps. The app is reported to have outperformed other AI and chatbot apps as well as Microsoft Edge and Bing apps in the U.S. in terms of downloads since its launch, according to data.ai.

At the moment OpenAI has the ChatGPT app only for iOS. However, being backed by Microsoft and marquee VC firms the AI company also has plans for having an Android version which it has promised to bring soon to the market.
