Parliament has Thursday evening passed a motion to extend the controversial simcard verification deadline for a period of one year.
According to the directive by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), telecommunications operators were supposed to disconnect all unverified SIM cards by midnight tonight.
The move had had been challenged in court by several entities although a high court ruling on Thursday morning confirmed that the deadline would still stand.
In a parliamentary session on Thursday afternoon, legislators unanimously agreed to have the deadline extended for a period of one year.
