Government through the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives has rolled out hotlines that members of the public can use to lodge complaints about retailers charging extortionate prices on sugar.

The lines were unveiled by Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde, on Monday Monday May 15th.

Kyambadde over the weekend directed that no one should sell a kilogram of sugar beyond Shs5000 although retailers continue to charge more than that.

She unveiled the hotlines as 031234100/254 and the SMS code *201# which she said have been activated to receive complaints about retailers selling above the recommended price.

Currently, a kilogram of sugar ranges between Shs5000 to 10,000 although government indicates that efforts are being made to make sure the prices normalize.

Furthermore, Kakira and Lugazi sugar factories have postponed their annual maintenance from June to October 2017 in order to produce more sugar.
