Governments Need To Think Exponentially In The Digital Age
There is a discussion that has been going on in the ICT Association of Uganda Forum about Digital Migration in Uganda and how we should hire the Armed forces to handle this migration. The Argument was on how it has taken the Uganda Communications Commission long to meet the deadline for Digital Migration.
This got me thinking about how technology is evolving exponentially while governments are still moving linearly. I believe the countries that are going to advance really first are the one that have leaders who are willing to take chances with new trends in technology.
Yes, governments have fears and they have to protect the interests of the people but unnecessary regulations slows progress down and keep innovative companies from providing value to their customers.
This is very evident with Amazon and Alibaba. These are 2 different companies whose business depends on distribution of their products to the consumers. Last Year Amazon started piloting drone deliveries but due to regulations in the US, they are still not approved to do this in the public which is where there customers are, but in China, Alibaba has started this week to roll out drone deliveries to it’s customers. This Means Alibaba is going to use an innovation that seemed to have come from Amazon and satisfy customers, as Amazon is trying to get approval.
Rwanda as a country was able to beat the Digital Migration deadline because of the policies they have and because of their President who knows that the exponential implementation is very key for any government in this Digital Age and it doesn’t matte whether Rwanda as a country has fewer people, it is all about having a government that is will to go fast and Agile.
The Ugandan government needs to adapt this kind of methodology if we want things to move forward, and in this case I think UCC has delayed to meet this deadline because they are still doing things linearly in an exponential world.
