The Battle of the Smartphone Brands in Uganda

All phone brands available in Uganda are listed on Jumia, which gives the online shop exclusive insights in to how each phone brand is performing in the country. For Jumia Uganda specifically, Samsung is still the top selling smartphone brand – but Tecno edges close at number 2 and continues to secure an increasing amount of market share.

The competitive landscape in the smartphone industry over the last five years has shifted, welcoming the Chinese Brand Era. The Chinese brands dominating the sector have led to a reduction in the average price of a smartphone – making smartphones more accessible to the masses (democratisation).

Over the last three years the average price of a smartphone in Uganda has decreased by almost 45% – from 178 dollars in 2014 to 99 dollars in 2017 (according to Jumia Business Intelligence). This is largely accelerated by Chinese Brands such as Tecno, Itel and Infinix entering the Ugandan market with decreasing price points and surprisingly good specs.

The lowest priced smartphone currently on Jumia is the Fero A4001 at just UGX 143,000. Meanwhile, Jumia’s current bestseller – the Tecno CX Air – is priced at just UGX 90,000.[related-posts]

In other African markets, where Infinix has had presence for over 2 years, Infinix secures its position as the top selling smartphone brand on Jumia. Infinix officially entered the Ugandan market earlier this year and is on track to achieve a similar level of popularity, with price points ranging from UGX 298,000 (Infinix Smart) to UGX 929,000 (Infinix Zero 4 Plus).

The battle of the smartphone brands intensifies this week on Jumia Uganda website and via the free Jumia app, when the online shop will be running a ‘Game of Phones’ campaign. The promotion will see smartphones from the likes of Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Fero, Itel, Nokia and more, discounted to exclusive prices, with free delivery being offered in Kampala from 28th August – 10th September.
