Ugandan ‘Justice Innovations’ that Emerged Finalists in the 2018 HiiL Justice Accelerator

The Hague-based non-profit Legal and research advisory institution; HiiL, earlier this week announced its Justice Innovation finalists for its 2018 accelerator. With over 400+ submissions received, 33 emerged finalists from Benin, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. With Uganda and Kenya dominating in numbers of finalists 10, and 6 respectively.

HiiL aims to make justice work for people through new technologies, cutting edge knowledge on conflict resolution, and new forms of organisation and governance. The institution has been increasingly active in Africa in recent years.

The finalists of this edition, according to online reports, were assessed with four criteria; impact, sustainability, scalability and team. Additionally, HiiL involved external mentors to assess applications based on feasibility, social impact, and institutional roadblocks of their justice innovations.

The finalists from Uganda, Bataka Court Model, Tunga Innovations Ltd, Yunga, Via, BitShelter, JusticeBot, LegIT, Prison Officer Legal Empowerment (POLE) Model, ZZIMBA GAMES, and Muchomo Moments Ltd – will have pitch session on Friday 28th, September 2018 at Hotel Africana. The winning innovation, selected by the jury, will receive 5,000 EUROS (roughly UGX22.5 million) and enter the HiiL Justice Accelerator Programme 2018/19.
