Full Review: The Tecno Y2 smartphone

After the un-boxing of the Tecno Y2 and the first wave of the first impression, we took the low budget entry level smartphone for a spin. And what we learnt about it we bring to you in this breakdown.

We also got the chance to meet the Sales Manager of Tecno Uganda, Hong Ji who gave us his take on the pocket friendly smartphone. Be sure to check out his video below. So let’s get to it, shall we;

Display
The Y2 has a 4.0 inch display, which is smaller than the average phone being released in this age. It packs a screen resolution of 800 x 480 pixels and TFT display technology.

Display features include Ambient Light Sensor, multi touch and proximity sensor.

Camera
Primary camera is 2 MP/0.3 camera combo that surprisingly has a flash beside it, which is pretty uncommon for budget phones. The secondary camera sports a VGA.

The camera options includes; LED Flash, autofocus, digital zoom, geo-tagging and HDR Capture.

Processor, Memory & Storage
The Y2 houses a dual core MediaTek MT6572M system on a chip. Its CPU runs at 1.3 GHz, which is about typical for clock speed. It has 8 GB (5.8 GB usable) of storage and a 512 MB RAM.

Software
The Y2 runs the now obsolete Android 4.4 KitKat.

User experience
The Tecno Y2 is a very comfortable Android 3G device that offers the simple applications seamlessly. It has an amazing battery life of up to 5 hours talk time and 8 hours on standby.

I did not experience any lag using the device to run the common apps, though it cannot handle to run high end graphic demanding games.

Alternative devices
Alternative to the Tecno Y2 is the Tecno N5 4G smartphone which is also an entry level smartphone, packing 5 MP secondary camera, Android 5.1 Lollipop in a 4.5” FWVGA Touchscreen.

The Tecno Y4 is another alternative entry level smartphone that packs a 5.0 MP + 0.3 MP dual camera, 8 GB ROM + 1 GB RAM.

Overall rating
For the entry level category the Tecno Y2 is in, it scores a 3.5/5 star rating.

The Tecno Y2 will be available at MTN stores countrywide and online you can order it from the MTN Shop on Jumia at a price of only 170,000 UGX.
