Event: Symposium on Transformative Digital Technologies, 3rd February 2016

The College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) at Makerere University in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs, Nokia and the Marconi Society will host the 3rd annual “Symposium on Transformative Digital Technologies” on Wednesday, 3rd February 2016 at Hotel Africana.

According to their website, this symposium will showcase the work carried out by the Celestini Project at CEDAT as well as act as a forum for the discussion of technological breakthroughs that will deliver future networks to turbo-charge developing economies. All papers and posters presented at the symposium will be reviewed by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) for consideration and selected posters will be displayed. Those that meet the expected levels of quality and technical content will be accepted for publication in the Symposium on Transformative Digital Technologies Compendium of Papers.

Makerere Celestine Program is founded by Marconi Society. The Marconi Society supports ongoing public education programs that examine the societal implications of telecommunications technology. The Society also recognizes and encourages young scientists through its Paul Baran Young Scholar Awards. The Society’s activities promote awareness of major innovations in communication theory, technology and applications with particular attention to understanding how they change and benefit society.

Robert W. Tkach the Director of the Advanced Photonics Research department Bell Laboratories, Alcatel-Lucent will be the keynote speaker and the other speakers include Derrick Sebbaale (Chief Technical Officer Vodafone Uganda), Kyle Spencer (Director of the Uganda Internet eXchange Point) and Diarmuid Ó Briain (Associate Lecturer, Makerere University).

Some of the topics to be discussed during the event include: Enterprise Networks & Wide Area Networks (WAN), Network Security & Broadband access, Internet of Things, Cloud Computing & Communications, Home networking & Wireless access, Enterprise Local Area Networks (LAN), Network energy & Information and Network operations.

This is a great opportunity for MSc and PhD candidates to demonstrate their projects and/or have an academic paper published in the compendium of papers to come out post the event.
