Windows 10 Security Features

When Microsoft announced the roll out of Windows 10, there were big expectations of the new security features. Given the current climate of hacking, and the increasing methods being used such as ransomware, there is a huge onus on operating system providers to better their security domain.

Windows 10 offers a wide range of new security features that ensures that it is the most secure version of Windows to date. If you are concerned about security, then Windows 10 is a very good option when wanting to keep your mind at rest.

Some of the key features are:

Windows Hello – Considered by some as one of the most sophisticated methods of logging on to a PC, ‘Hello’ offers a solution to passwords that can be easily compromised by hackers. ‘Hello’ uses biometrics such as facial recognition and fingerprints, as well as a pin. It is both quick and much more difficult for cyber criminals to take advantage. Another great feature is that the user can determine the method of authentication for themselves.

Windows Defender Security Center – This new feature will be part of the update due in April. Its purpose is to give Windows 10 users more information regarding their security set up. By default, your PC will be protected and continually protected for the time to come.

The five areas that it will cover are Virus and Threat Protection, Device Performance and Health, Firewall and Network Protection, App and Browser Control, and Family Options. The Family Options is a much-appreciated feature for parents that want to make sure their kids aren’t coming into any danger online. Most parents find it difficult to keep an eye on what their children are accessing, and who they are talking to. However, this feature will enable you to better track through regular reports.

Information Protection – With a large focus on businesses and the concerns of employees losing laptops and causing a data protection breach, Windows 10 has improved the approach to data protection. With out of the box device encryption, there is no longer a requirement for an IT department to set up encryption devices. Encryption has also improved regarding speed, so there is much less waiting time for flash drives to be encrypted.

SmartScreen – Detecting dangerous sites has become easier and more thorough. Some web browsers already do this, but now there is an added level of security in the detection of high-risk sites such as file-sharing sites.

Firewall boost – The firewall settings are also an improvement over previous versions, as they control outbound connections as well as incoming connections.

Backup – A vital element of protecting data is to have adequate backup plans in place, and Windows 10 has a comprehensive File History option to retrieve deleted files. Data recovery is a big priority for companies and individuals, and there is a wide range of data recovery professional services that can be used if data is lost, either accidentally or by a cyber attack.

Windows 10 has certainly made using operating systems a whole lot safer, and other operating systems are struggling to compete.
