Rwanda’s networks Slash LTE tariffs by 70%

Following a public outcry due to the country’s prohibitively high LTE charges, Rwandan internet service provider ISPA has slashed its Long Term Evolution (LTE) tariffs by almost 70%.

The new rates were agreed upon with wholesale provider Olleh Rwanda Networks (ORN), the joint venture between the Rwandan government and KT Corp, ISPA’s chief executive officer Peter Maridadi said.

With the new updated price plans, 1GB of LTE data now costs RWF1,3000 (USD1.89), down from RWF4,100(USD5.95) per GB charged previously.

The move follows previous announcement made by Rwanda’s Minister for Youth and ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana that the government was in negotiations with industry players in regards to halving the price of LTE to allow for the uptake of the technology.

ORN launched its open-access LTE network on 11 November 2014 and offers 4G connectivity to local mobile operators and internet service providers (ISPs) on a wholesale basis.
