Twitter to collect apps data so as to serve more targeted ads

twitter-touch-635According to Recode, Twitter is looking to collect more information about its users to make ads more effective.

This will be through an upcoming update to its mobile apps.

Twitter will begin amassing information on what apps its users have downloaded onto their devices. This data can be collected on both Android and iOS devices – it runs a query for the names of the apps you have installed.

Twitter could know you have YouTube installed, but not know what videos you’ve watched.

The information will help it deliver more relevant promoted content, as well give better suggestions on who to follow.

The program is opt-out, so everyone’s data will be automatically collected unless you choose to turn the feature off. Users will receive a prompt as the feature goes live, however, and you can turn the feature off or back on via your respective settings menu.
