Canadian High Commission to Fund Ugandan Startups

The High Commission of Canada has launched its annual call for proposals for the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI). Ugandan startups are eligible for the fund, and are called to apply not later than July 4th, 2019.

The fund is between $15,000 (approx. UGX42 million) — $20,000 (approx. UGX56 million) Canadian Dollars.

The CFLI is a program designed to support small-scale, high-impact projects in developing countries, which align with Global Affairs Canada’s thematic priority areas for engagement.

The program is as well directed at projects conceived and designed predominantly by local partners.

To apply for the fund, that startup must align with at least one of CFLI thematic priorities. The priorities include —

  1. Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls with a specific focus on refugees.
  2. Inclusive governance, including diversity, democracy, human rights and the rule of law, with a specific focus on the LGBTI community, and freedom of the press.

The CFLI project application process will require a gender-based analysis. The purpose of this change is to enhance the gender equality outcomes of the CFLI program.

This is because, in 2017, Canada adopted its Feminist International Assistance Policy to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls as the most effective way to reduce poverty and build a more inclusive, peaceful and prosperous world.

Therefore, female founded startups are highly called to apply for the fund. Or the teams submitting should at least have more than one female participants.

As mentioned before, the deadline for submission is 12a.m (EAT) July 4th, 2019. In addition, all proposals must be submitted electronically to the email cfliuganda@gmail.com. After the vetting process, only the successful applicants will be contacted.

Note that during the application process, applicants have to a series of questions. To obtain the application for, email cfliuganda@gmail.com.
