Reversing Mobile Money Sent on a Wrong MTN Number

Telecommunication firm; MTN Uganda over the weekend through its Twitter account gave a brief of how one could reverse mobile money sent to a wrong MTN number.

This comes after a number of people have registered multiple complains to the telco on this issue. However much the fault isn’t for the telco but the sender, the telco still has to help out to keep a good reputation with its customers.

Last year, Makerere University School of Law Lecturer, Dr. Busingye Kabumba filed a case against the telco for this same incident. The lecturer took his cry to Twitter where a number of tweeps shared the same cries of the telco not to be in position of reversing their money. But the issue was resolved with Kabumba and he was in position to get back his money.

Telecom companies have put some measures in place to see that its customers send mobile money to the right/intended person(s). One of the best is the send is in position to see the name of the recipient their are sending the money too. If the sender isn’t sure of convinced on who their are sending the money to, they’re highly recommended to contact the recipient to find out the names registered to the number the money is being sent to.

But, mistakes do happen. To reverse back the money, actions need to be done as soon as possible. How,

The first thing you’ll do immediately is to call MTN customer care line which is 100. The telco has also directed its customers to use social media — WhatsApp them via 0772 123 100, or through Twitter and Facebook.

MTN will then contact the person you mistakenly sent the money to seek permission of having the money reversed. If the wrong recipient accepts, the reversal will be effected in a period of 24 hours.

This can only be done when the money hasn’t been withdrawn yet.

In a case where the wrong recipient refuses to reverse the money, MTN advises the sender to get a court order to allow them reverse the money.

On the other hand, if the wrong recipient’s number is off, MTN says it can reverse the money if the number has been for up to 3 months.

Note that, MTN is still the leading telco when it comes to mobile money followed by Airtel then Africell.

UCC released its fourth quarter (Q4) of 2018 Communication’s Sector report that showed the performance of mobile money. In the report, a combined total of 184,529 mobile money agents and over 625 million transactions were made. The number of transactions grew tremendously from 554,412,571 to 625,314,713.
