The Wikipedia Foundation in partnership with MTN Rwanda yesterday introduced free access to world largest online encyclopedia for its customers, who will get unlimited access to Wikipedia free of charge on their mobile devices via MTN mobile internet (2G and 3G).
Ebenezer Asante, the MTN CEO said the company is an innovation power house.
“We have in the past launched other services relevant to our customers, Magic Voice and many others; we believe the innovation of Wikipedia will put Rwanda on the map,” he said.
He added that Wikipedia Zero, as the service is called, is a vital component of MTN’s mobile strategy, which focuses on offering access to information and educational content in order to empower Rwandans.
Vincent Biruta, the Education Minister said that the ministry will promote the free Wikipedia among youth and students so that they exploit it for their benefit. “Wikipedia will contribute to enhancing the quality of education in the country,” he remarked.
Minister of Youth and ICT Jean Philbert Nsengimana observed that there are still some barriers to internet access, such as affordability of the devices, education and lack of knowledge on the importance of internet.
“We shall make sure that we bring Rwandans online and use this service, which they can access for free,” he said.
Wikipedia Zero now extends free mobile access to more than 90 million people in Africa; MTN Rwanda, has over 3.5 million subscribers.
