#Hack4Ag Uganda: Developing ICT Tools to Empower Small holder Farmers

The world bank under the World Bank’s Agriculture Global Practice (GFADR), the Government of Uganda and the Government of South Korea with the aim to develop ICT innovations and entrepreneurship in Ugandan agriculture are organising the #Hack4Ag event slated for June 20-25, 2016 at the Nile resort hotel in Jinja. #Hack4Ag aims to contribute to the transformation of the agricultural sector and youth engagement in agriculture through technology.

The Agriculture Cluster Development Project (ACDP) is a new program from the Ugandan Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industries, and Fisheries which will provide assistance to farmers to intensify production of key farm commodities (rice, maize, cassava, beans, and coffee). Participating farmers will be given support to scale-up their use of modern inputs and become more effective in the marketing of their harvested products. Farmers will also be given decision tools to help them maximize returns on their operations. The proposed hackathon will be used to develop some of the decision tools to be used by farmers under the ACDP.

The event will be bring together teams from Uganda and south korea as they battle out to from the ideal solution for farmers in the country in areas of market pricing, Data Collection on Pests and Disease Outbreak, Technology Localization, Weather Information, and Location Specific Cropping Calendars among other areas.

The winning team at the hackathon will be given an opportunity to further develop their winning prototype applications for uptake under ACDP. Support will be provided. Second and third place teams will receive further mentorship opportunities from South Korea.

The teams from Uganda will include the simple guys from Ndejje university who won the marie stopes Ug health app challenge recently.
