Airtel and Warid introduced smart internet plans that will see internet penetration spread deeper in the rural parts of Uganda.
They have ensured that all their customers will be able to access internet all over Uganda wherever they are able to make a phone call. Customers to both net works will be able to access internet from as low as shs. 500 for 50 MB of data.
Uganda’s internet penetration is about 6 million people (16% of the population) and Airtel – Warid are hoping to have doubled that figure in the next few months by ensuring that all the 7.2 million people are enjoying cheap reliable 3G network across the country.
The Managing Director Airtel Uganda Mr VG Somasekar stated that “Airtel and Warid intend to continue leading in innovations for increased affordability and access to ICT tools. We have ensured that wherever you can make a phone call in Uganda, you can also access internet. This is an intentional drive aimed at increasing the internet penetration in Uganda considerably by 2015″

Also speaking at the launch was the State Minister for ITC, Hon Nyombi thembo stated that ” We are grateful to Airtel and warid for their innovations in creating and harnessing the latest technologies and business models for the benefit of Uganda.” In the same statement he pledged continued support from government towards all their endeavors.
Currently, Airtel and Warid’s have over 340 3G network sites across Uganda, in both urban and rural areas.
