Windows Phone 7 Is Not For Tablets, Says Microsoft

He said that certain functions from the desktop version of Windows, such as printing and networking, would be essential for tablet users.

Microsoft’s position is almost the opposite of that of Apple, one of its key rivals and the current leader of the tabloid computing market.

When Apple developed the iPad it built the device to run on the same iOS operating system used by the iPhone. Though iOS shares the same roots as OS X, Apple’s desktop operating system, it is very clearly a mobile product.

Google seems to share Apple’s view of tablet operating systems. Android is its offering as a tablet operating system, while its Chromebooks run on the Chrome OS.

Microsoft is holding its partner conference in Los Angeles this week. Earlier this week, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s CEO, admitted that Windows Phone 7 was still “very small” compared with the competition.

However, he said that he expected the platform to grow very quickly. Mr Ballmer told attendees at the conference: “It’s been a heck of year and you are going to see lots of programs in that market as we move forward.”
