The Medical Concierge Group (TMCG) has launched an Artificial Intelligent (AI) health chatbot, a first in Uganda and on the African continent. The new chatbot is personalized as a female personal health advisor named “Mirembe” that offers free triage and care advice to health symptoms in Facebook Messenger. Mirembe is a Luganda word for “Peace”.
A chatbot replicates interactive human conversation by processing natural language and using predetermined automated text-based responses. The AI is built to process the health symptoms provided against age, gender, symptom severity and duration, known medical problems, and other clinical findings to provide a triage recommendation and advice.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Davis Musinguzi, TMCG Managing Director, remarked; “Mirembe is able to provide users with real-time triage recommendations and first-line health advice with a very personal touch. This innovation that combines world-class clinical content with Artificial Intelligence and Messenger as a platform to revolutionize the way Africans shall have access to primary health care. Mirembe is currently available at no cost for anyone, anywhere and at any time. This is another first from TMCG and demonstrates our determination to use technology to achieve universal access to affordable and quality healthcare.”
To use the chatbot, a user has to go to Facebook Messenger, search for “Mirembe” in the search tab or follow this direct link http://m.me/mirembebot and select the “Get Started” button for the first encounter. For subsequent encounters, just say ‘Hi’, ‘Hello’ and Mirembe will respond. At the end of the encounter, Mirembe will provide the user with a summary report and the user can also rate their experience and provide suggestions.
A human touch was added to complement Mirembe by providing a request-call-back option at the end of the encounter. TMCG’s 24/7 call centre medical doctors and pharmacists will receive a notification, review your submitted information and call you back to further discuss your health symptoms and recommend lab investigations and/or a treatment plan.
Mirembe answers the questions, “Do I need to see a doctor? “, “How serious might this be?“, “When and where should I go for care?”. The AI-powered chatbot is able to cover a wide range of internationally classified symptoms and disease conditions. However, users need to understand that Mirembe does not replace their Doctor or make a definitive diagnosis. Mirembe also guarantees the confidentiality of all users’ responses and personal information.
TMCG has more plans this year of furthering the integration of advanced AI into their telemedicine offerings to provide faster and more accurate clinical decision support to reach even more people in Africa where the need is greatest.
