Uganda’s ride-hailing app for motorcycle taxis; Safeboda and online bus ticketing app; UgaBus Inc. were nominated in the 2018 AppsAfrica Awards in Best African App and Mobility & Transport categories respectively.
With winners set to be announced on 12th November, 2018, from the 70 finalists, Uganda has only two nomination while likes of South Africa (20), Nigeria (14), and Kenya (10) dominate the awards with the highest nominations.
According to AppsAfrica, even though majority of entries were received from South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya, many entries were also received from smaller markets including Malawi, Sao Tome & Principe, Mauritania, and Liberia, illustrating the growth of innovation across the continent.
The AppsAfrica Awards, in 4th of its running, reported to have received over 300+ submissions from 39 African countries (Uganda inclusive), with solutions launched across all 54 African markets by startups, established ventures, and corporate’s.
Safeboda, and Ugabus Inc. making finalists with the rest, were assessed and judged by an independent panel of industry experts; media, investors, and leaders from the tech space.
Safeboda in the category of ‘Best African App’ is nominated with Farmcrowdy (Nigeria), Fedgroup for Impact Farming (South Africa), Inzone Adlink for Hey Jude App (South Africa), and biNu Africa for Moya Messenger (South Africa).
On the other hand, Ugabus Inc. was nominated in the category of ‘Mobility & Transport’ with Flx (South Africa), LULA (South Africa), Yego Innovision (Rwanda), and Zuoix for ZOOMED (Cameroon).
While Safeboda might not sound so new to many, majority mightn’t be so known to Ugabus Inc. It’s an app that solves the problem of one having to walk to a bus terminal to book their next trip or having to call the customer services at bus terminals to book their next trip. Thus, the team developed an application, available for iOS, and Android, that allows one to book their next trip from where they are to travel within East Africa territory. On the other hand, users can not only book using the application but allows via the web.
Ugabus Inc. operates in 6 African countries .i.e. Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
