Yesterday, Rome-based ANSA news reported that Pope Francis will indeed officially open an instagram account on March 19th, 2016  under the handle “Franciscus” in a statement to Vatican radio by the Prefect for Communications, Msgr Dario Viganò.

The announcement followed a private visit by Instagram founder and CEO Kevin Systrom to the Pope, according to TIME Magazine, during which Kevin shared with him powerful images and their ability to break social boundaries and bring people together. At the meeting which took place at the Apostolic Palace, the two looked over images including those from the exodus of migrants and refugees from the Middle East into Europe and some from the Nepalese earthquake .

Pope Francis has spoken about the power of the internet and has time and time again encouraged its users to build a healthy and open sharing environment has held a Twitter account, which launched in 2012, has has grown to 8.87 million followers.

In what’s being looked at as a move for Facebook owned Instagram to position itself as the leading visual communications platform, Instagram is definitely looking at big figures should the World’s Beloved Pope Francis hope onto this wagon. In fact, some forums on which this is being discussed candidly assert that the Kardashians should be worried.
