Kabaka commissions the MTN Mobile Money collection platform for Kingdom dev’t initiatives

MTN Uganda in conjunction with the Kingdom of Buganda has launched a Mobile Money fundraising platform where the kingdom’s subjects and well-wishers will contribute funds to support Kabaka’s various development initiatives.

The launch ceremony graced by the Kabaka of Buganda HRH Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, took place in Kyagwe- Mukono on 8th October 2013. The event which coincided with the Kingdom’s community development drives (also known as Bulungi Bwansi) attracted hundreds of the Kabaka’s subjects and was attended by officials from MTN and the Kingdom.

The platform that was officially commissioned by the Kabaka, will be operated through the MTN Mobile Money service. And through this initiative, Money donated by well-wishers will be collected for the purpose of facilitating the kingdom’s various development initiatives. To be part of and contribute to the initiative, MTN customers need to have registered for the MTN Mobile Money service. When registered, customers will follow these simple steps;

Step 1 – Select Mobile Money

  1. Step 2 – Select Pay Bill
  2. Step 3 – Select Pay Goods and Services
  3. Step 4 – Enter the Code (the code is BUGANDA)

BUGANDA should be typed in capital letters

  1. 4.   Step 5 – Enter Amount
  2. 5.    
  3. Step 6 – Enter Reference (the reference is TWEZIMBE)

TWEZIMBE should be typed in capital letters

  1. Step 7 – Confirm payment

  2. Step 8 – Step 9 – Enter your Mobile Money PIN and press OK

Speaking to his subjects, Kabaka Mutebi pointed out three major projects that are in need of development including; re-building of the Masiro, renovation of the Bulange buildings and funds for the Bulungi Bwansi projects among several others. He urged the people of Buganda and well-wishers to embrace this innovation from MTN and donate generously towards the development of the Kingdom.

Delivering his remarks, MTN Uganda’s Head of Mobile Money, Phrase Lubega reiterated MTN’s mission of making the lives of MTN’s customers a whole lot brighter through similar initiatives that deliver simpler, convenient and affordable solutions to our customers and the community. He added that, “Mobile money has transformed the way we live our lives and has proven to be better money for transactions – whether for domestic or business purposes”.

Also in attendance was MTN Uganda’s General Manager Sales and Distribution, Shaibu Haruna and MTN Uganda’s Board Chairman, Charles Mbire.

Mbire announced a contribution of UShs. 50 million from the MTN Uganda Foundation towards the refurbishment of the Masiro- Kasubi Tombs that were destroyed by fire in March 2010. The MTN Uganda Foundation has over the years contributed to a number of development initiatives and particularly supported Tourism under the scope of National priority Areas. Being a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs are a key facet of Uganda’s rich culture and history, and are one of its cherished tourism assets.

The MTN Uganda Foundation was launched late 2007. It is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of MTN Uganda that carries out various charitable projects within the communities it operates. From 2013 going forward, the MTN Uganda Foundation will focus on three programme areas to guide its interventions. These include Education, Health and National Priority Areas.
