Kilimanjaro featured in Google’s Street View

Google now has 360-degree views of Kilimanjaro as well as other mountains that are considered the world’s highest.

Now Google users can virtually view Kilimanjaro through Google Maps’ Street View, including mountains such as Mount Elbrus in Europe, Aconcagua in South America and the Everest base camp in Nepal.

“While there’s nothing quite like standing on the mountain, with Google Maps you can instantly transport yourself to the top of these peaks and enjoy the sights without all of the avalanches, rock slides, crevasses, and dangers from altitude and weather that mountaineers face,” said Google in a blog post.

In order to bring the views of the world’s largest mountains, street view Google teams had to climb the different mountains to take the photographs for the online map service using tripod-mounted digital cameras equipped with a fisheye view lens to capture the 360-degree views.
